C+M: Let’s start from the beginning. How did you get into skiing? And what is it about skiing that keeps you so hooked?

MM: I started skiing about the same time I was learning to walk, early age 2. I started racing in elementary school and went on my first helicopter backcountry skiing assignment at age 12 in Valdez, AK. It was then I started focusing on freeskiing and left the racing world. Powder, friendship and accepting the unknown keeps me hooked!

C+M: What business or career moves lead you to the role you're currently in?

MM: Joining Scarpa, Flylow, and Icelantic have landed me in the role I am currently in. Without the support of those companies, I wouldn't be able to ski professionally.

C+M: If you had to identify one major rule to live life by, what would it be?

MM: Accept the unknown - anything is possible.

C+M: What else do you do when you're not skiing?

MM: I love to play my guitar! I also love writing songs.

C+M: We hear you often do multiple ski runs and/or competitions in one day, how do you keep your energy up and fight any physical discomfort that may come with that?

MM: Hydration and fitness. I like to trail run during the off-season to make sure I can handle the physical demands of the long days when it matters.

C+M: Can you tell us about your experiences as a musician and how you found that passion?

MM: I started playing music when I was 10 years old. My mother really urged that I play the piano, but I gravitated towards the guitar because my father had an old Martin guitar that I was attracted to. Brother Timmy played the mandolin, and sister Sarah sang most of the songs so we would sing and play as a family growing up.

I found my ultimate passion for music during 9th grade, however, while riding on the high school football bus to Buena Vista for a playoff game. I was only about 100 pounds at the time, so I didn't play in the game but rather sat on the sidelines with my mother’s Walkman portable tape player. I had a tape of the David Grisman Quintet. While the game played I listened to the tape over and over and on the way home I kept rewinding the tape to a song called "Ricochet". That song and that moment truly changed the trajectory of my life that included music as a priority.
